Blue Cross of Idaho is a mission-driven organization that cares deeply about Idaho. The company established the Blue Cross of Idaho Foundation for Health (the Foundation) more than 20 years ago to give back to the state and address the root causes that impact health. The Foundation has been the vehicle to continually give back to Idaho independently of the insurance company since 2001.
The Blue Cross of Idaho Foundation for Health is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. The Foundation and health insurance company are affiliates, but they are separate organizations with their own unique IRS tax identification numbers.
While their names and logos are similar, each organization operates as its own entity. Each has its own board of directors, office space, and independent financial budgets. While the Foundation was initially funded by the insurance company, it does not continually receive annual donations from Blue Cross of Idaho and is not a line item in the company’s annual budget.
As you probably know, the healthcare industry can have its ups and downs, highs and lows, peaks and valleys, or whatever analogy you prefer that describes industry volatility. One thing that doesn’t waver is Blue Cross of Idaho’s dedication to our state, but there are times when it is more difficult for the company to give back on its own.
That’s where the Foundation comes in. As an IRS-compliant nonprofit organization, the Foundation must spend a minimum of 5% of its assets each year. It does so regardless of what’s happening in the health insurance world or economic climate.
The Foundation is dedicated to giving back to Idaho and addressing the root causes that impact health. Its vision is to build a healthier Idaho and create impact across our state. The Foundation reached all 44 Idaho counties last year, providing funding for 272 projects and grants, and worked with more than 600 partners.
The Foundation doesn’t sell health insurance or pay claims, but its work contributes to building a healthier Idaho and creating impact that will last for generations. That’s something near and dear to Blue Cross of Idaho’s mission.
